9th - 11th April
15th - 17th October

Ever dreamed of writing an article for a magazine or newspaper, a family history, or even a book but don’t know how to go about it?  Or have you written something which you would like to see in print, but you need advice about how to have it published?

Arnolds Hotel Writers Break If so, then why not come along to a residential Writing Weekend where award-winning journalist and author, Alf McCreary will suggest ways in which you can turn your ideas into print.  He will also provide valuable professional guidelines about the writing business, in the relaxed atmosphere of an historic family hotel, with first-class cuisine and relaxing after-dinner entertainment.

Alf McCreary was educated at Queen’s University, Belfast, where he took an Honours B.A. in Modern History, and later a Diploma in Education.  He spent more than twenty years as a leading writer with the Belfast Telegraph, and was Rothman’s Journalist of the year.  He has written twenty-five books, and countless articles for publication in Britain, Europe and the U.S.A.

For fourteen years he was Head of Information at Queen’s University, Belfast, a post he relinquished to return to full-time writing.  He is currently a tutor in the University’s Institute of Continuing Education where he teaches a course on “Writing for Profit and Pleasure”, and he also teaches at the Irish Writers’ Centre in Dublin.

The residential weekend is aimed at people of all levels and will include an introduction to writing, and provide practical advice about how to market your work.  It will also focus on newspapers, magazines and book publishing, the importance of the interview, and how to make the best of your talent.  Those taking part will be required to carry out some practical work.  In addition, all participants will be presented with a certificate on completing the course.

The objective is to provide an informative, enjoyable and participative weekend for those who want to develop their writing skills and to see their work published.

The course, which began three years ago, proved very popular and attracted participants, including beginners, from Cork, Dublin and Belfast, as well as Maghera, Lurgan, Dungannon, Carrickfergus and other parts of Northern Ireland, and Milton Keynes  in England.  As places on the course are limited early booking is advisable.

“Alf McCreary is a marvellous host and a very professional lecturer.   The course was exactly what I had hoped for and we all gained a lot from it.  Dunfanaghy is a wonderful setting.”- Carrickfergus participant.

“It was a real privilege to take part in the “Writers’ Weekend”, in Arnold’s Hotel, Dunfanaghy.  I learned a great deal from Alf McCreary, and the conversations and interaction between members of the group, which was very friendly, gave me an insight into the writer’s world.  The accommodation and food were excellent, and the view across the mystical Sheephaven Bay to Horn Head was inspiring.  It was a very worthwhile weekend”. -  County Down participant.

Writers Package €275.00 per person sharing  includes Welcome Sherry Reception, 2 gourmet dinners on Friday and Saturday evening in the Seascapes Restaurant, illustrated Lectures, Coffee Breaks, Two Light Lunches, as well as two full Irish breakfasts.
