Dunfanaghy Golf Club – Our Neighbours in Focus

Around Ireland, there are countless wonderful small villages that have a sense of togetherness as soon as you step out of the car. Small, tight knit and rural these villages rely on the innovation and cooperation of the community to ensure that factors such as isolation don’t act to their detriment.

Although we may be biased, we feel it may be hard to find a clearer example of a community spirit of joined up thinking than Dunfanaghy. Our village relies on tourism and a stroll down our small main street will give you an idea of how geared up we are for visitors. Coffee shops, craft businesses, cafes, surf schools, pubs and restaurants all hold pride of place in the village. It is on the edge of town however that you will find a well-known jewel in our offering for tourists.

A Special Club

Dunfanaghy Golf Club has been a friend and close working partner of Arnolds Hotel for many years now. Based on varied records, the origin of the golf club can be dated back to between 1896 and 1906. Having celebrated our 95th birthday just a few months ago, we are fairly confident that Arnolds has been hosting golf breaks including a round at Dunfanaghy for almost a century!

The appeal of Dunfanaghy can be categorised in many ways. The views of Sheephaven Bay and Horn Head are mesmerising and may well prove a distraction. The welcome in the modern yet quaint clubhouse is exactly what you will come to expect in Donegal with a friendly face never far away. The golf provides a links challenge but thankfully this is a layout that is playable for all levels. Dunfanaghy Golf Club is designed for enjoyment as opposed to being overly challenging which ensures that your score card on a calm day will leave you feeling pretty happy with life.

All of these factors combine to ensure that you will be delighted to return to Dunfanaghy Golf Club day after day during your break at Arnolds.

Course Review

For the everyday club golfer, the 400 yard drives and 7,500 yard courses we see on TV can feel like watching a different game. Many courses are now setting up to challenge the average amateur in a similar fashion leading to a demoralising and joy free round of golf. This is not the case at Dunfanaghy Golf Club.

A par 68 course at under 6,000 yards is certainly a removal from the modern trend of ‘longer is better’. Don’t be fooled by the yardage however. Dunfanaghy GC is renowned for having some of the finest greens in the country and the speed of these will have you on guard at all times. Add to this the wind which regularly batters the course off the North Atlantic and you will soon realise that any ideas of an easy 18 can be forgotten.

The course is overall flat meaning the walk is enjoyable for all ages and fitness levels. The first 7 holes present a stern challenge as you make your way away from the club house a little inland. With 5 of the most difficult holes coming in the first 7, if you stand on the 8th tee with your score still intact you can breathe a sigh of relief.

From this point onwards you play holes bordering the bay with opportunities galore to ruin a scorecard. Despite the perils of this stretch, the views are spectacular with the 10th being a particular standout as you tee off on the dog leg par 4 across the beach with the big hitters being tempted to have a pop at the green.

Our favourite hole is without doubt the 17th as you make your way home. From the tee on this lengthy Par 3, you can see Dunfanaghy village in the distance and can almost taste your pint of Guinness in front of the fire at Arnolds. First of all though you have to negotiate a long Par 3 with anything to the right of the green making its way onto the inviting beach and out of bounds. Named by Green Golf Travel as one of the best 18 holes in Donegal, this hole will live long in the memory.

Overall this is a course that is playable. Golf on holiday should not be traumatic and at Dunfanaghy Golf Club, they have found the perfect balance between being challenging and enjoyable. Our guests over the past 95 years overwhelmingly agree!
